According to the Standard Catalog, Crouch began in 1895, but was finished by 1900. It does not sound as though there was ever any volume, so perhaps this is the car that was claimed to have traveled "over frozen, hilly and muddy roads, 4 1/2 miles in 15 minutes". Quite a claim for that time and those conditions.....

Did you know that one of the founders of Chevrolet, a man who helped Billy Durant regain control of General Motors, was born in Port Perry, ON? Nope--I'm not referring to Col. Sam McLaughlin. Doctor Edwin Campbell was Durant's son-in-law, and a key player in the formation of Chev.

This is a bit of a guess, but it appears to be a circa 1919 Cunningham. A similar, or perhaps the same car with different wheels, can be found with a google search, pictured at the National Auto Museum in Reno.

Steve was kind enough to pass along a couple more shots of his Studebaker restoration project. I'm really looking forward to seeing this fine car on the road. Thanks Steve!

"My 1915 Studebaker restoration is progressing slowly but surely. The original dry cell box had been removed from the car. Luckily, I found most of the pieces and was able to reconstruct it and copy it. It's located directly under the driver's seat. (it seemed a shame to paint it black but all the wood in the car has been spar varnished and coated with a flat black as original).

I've spent some long hours retrofitting the main switch box with modern switches as well as reproducing the buttons and locking mechanism in stainless (most of which is hidden by the cover plate.) With the new switches, the box will now extend about an inch further into the area under the front seat but there's plenty of room there. This switch box controls everything electrical and the access panel is located on the seat riser about where your heels would be. (not too handy!) There are no controls on the dash. You can see the rectangular hole for it in the front seat photo. I'm just finishing up the new cover plate.

The aluminum steering wheel spider and original wood turned out pretty well."

More Sad News

Those members who have participated in Snappers events may know the Erausquins. Tom received this terrible news from John McAnlis.

Wanted to let you know that Bob Erausquin and June were in a horrible accident in Georgia on their way to Naples, FL for the winter months. June was killed and Bob just slightly injured bodily, but is going to need lots of support. June's funeral is in Glenview, IL on Saturday, November 26th. Bob will be able to attend after being in the hospital for several days.

Mystery wheels

Can anyone provide an idea on what these were for? Our friend Chris picked them up at auction recently, and offers the following observations:

Unusual with a splined hub. Actually only 1/2 splined. Rim is clincher and big (25 or 26"). Any guesses? Bigger than motorcycle or cyclecar. The hub is also centered, not set towards the back like a typical car wheel. Definitely all original, not modified. They would take a 33 or 34" clincher tire, which confuses me. The splined hub makes me think they were on the rear or drive wheels, otherwise they would take bearings to roll.

So...any ideas?

We are sad to inform readers that Hugo's father, Cor Vermeulen, passed away suddenly this past weekend. Hugo, Linda, Danielle, Sarah, and Laura--I am very sorry for this terrible and shocking loss.

Of note, there were state runs of license plates that sold for as much as $30K, a 1909 T chassis for $15K, and a 1913 T engine for just $230. There are roads in the Hershey area with many twists and hills, trees overhanging, and not much traffic. Great Model T roads. I was lucky to have a ride on such a road this year, in a Model T that was perfect for the purpose.
This machine was built years ago, using T-era parts, and home-made touches. Most importantly, it has a Frontenac overhead valve setup. The bark and the heat from that side pipe is impressive.
I love the irony of Frontenac, and I should research it more. My impression is: Louis Chevy starts his car company with a quality product; Durant squeezes him out and uses the name to build a cheap vehicle (490) to challenge the Model T; Louis goes on to build speed equipment to improve the performance of the T--archrival of his namesake car.

Plowman’s Laundry

In the late 1930s W. Herbert Plowman operated a laundry service from the rear of 133 Mississaga Street east in Downtown Orillia. Leonard Hayhurst was the driver for Plowman’s and is shown here with the company's 1935 Ford Delivery Truck in front of his home at 75 Mississaga Street West. The building behind Leonard at 74 Mississaga Street West is no longer standing but was a restaurant owned by Mrs. Elizabeth Gethons when this photo was taken. Plowman's, using the slogan “Launderers and Dry Cleaners to Particular People”, was a pickup and delivery service and used Wagg's laundry for all its laundering and cleaning. Wagg’s Laundry was located at the corner of Victoria and Dufferin Streets and took over the Plowman business in the early 1940s. Leonard Hayhurst continued as a driver for Wagg’s after the takeover. It is interesting that seventy years later the Bell phone book continues to list “Plowman’s Orillia Laundry – see Wagg’s Laundry & Dry Cleaners” in the white pages.

Observations on the Sizaire Naudin

Jack offers the following keen observations:

The initial clue I see is the WWI issue gas can on the running board. The car looks well used
at the time of the photo. The side lights on the front fenders look later. The seemingly black,
treaded tires would indicate post 1915 or so. The Fedora hat worn by the driver became fashionable
around 1920 in the US, maybe a little earlier east of the Atlantic.

Having read the article, Doug sent me the photo below for identification. Sizaire Naudin was a pretty distinctive design, so I got that piece straight away, but the year is a bit puzzling. I think I've settled on 1910, but would love to hear arguments to the contrary. The car has been somewhat modified, so when do you think someone would do that to a car? 5 years old? Maybe less for a 1-cyl car when the trend was strongly to 4-cyl by that time? Doug would really like to know if the photo was taken before WWI, as it would support his suspicion that this may be his Grandfather.

I figure a bright red fire truck is fitting for Canada Day. Scott send me this photo of a '15 T, along with the following history.
This was Woodstock's first motorized fire truck. It was built by the Bain Wagon Works, Woodstock. They had their own fire dept.,the site took up a whole city block. Mr. Bain used his personal car a 1909 Model T touring to make this fire truck. The last time this truck was restored, the 1909 running gear was replaced with a 1915 running gear & the 1909 running gear had a runabout body put on it.

Many thanks to Jack for sending in this striking shot of a centre door sedan in front of a store that probably does a booming business for about one week per year. Upon closer inspection, it appears they have a sideline as a bookstore.
I like the short wheelbase/tall roof of the car against the narrow 4-story building.

Congratulations to the Smith clan!

We are happy to report that Van William Smith was born early this morning to Jessica and Andrew. Everyone is doing well, despite an arrival a couple of weeks earlier than anticipated. Van came into this world weighing 8 pounds, 10 ounces and having a full head of red hair. Overall, he’s perfect, although we could be slightly biased. Jessica and Andrew are both very excited to be starting this new phase of their lives.

Take a look at your can of Coke or Pepsi--is there a logo for Ball Packaging, maybe towards the bottom of the can?
In 1914, F.C. Ball reorganized the Inter-State Motor Company of Muncie, Indiana. Ball was, and remains today, a manufacturer of packaging, from wood-jacketed tins, to glass jars, to aluminum cans, and even cloud cameras.

Tour Announcement--Puttering Through The Pines, Too

August 1-5, 2011

Southern New Jersey is as rich in heritage as it is in beautiful roads and interesting shoreline vistas. This year the HCCA North Jersey Region is hosting the 2011 summer tour in collaboration with the Pioneer Automobile Touring Club in Vineland, New Jersey. In September of 2007, PATC hosted the original “Puttering Through the Pines” tour and has reinstated the concept for the 2011 “Puttering Through the Pines, Too” tour. Not a duplicate of the ’07 tour, this year the tour will be completely revamped with a few new surprises in store for the tourists. The tour will pass through parts of all of the counties in the southern half of the state where most people pass by without taking the time to explore its beauty.

The tour starts on Sunday night with a light buffet dinner at our host hotel, the Ramada Inn in Vineland. Monday we head east to see Victor Plumbo’s museum and travel north to Smithville with a stop at a winery before wandering through the Wharton State Forest. Tuesday we head west to visit with Fred Hoch and the Schaffer & Long Restoration shop before turning south to shop in Mullica Hill and then visit Greenwich, the place where the American Revolution got its start in 1774. Wednesday we check out of the Ramada for a fun 2 nights at the Jersey Shore, right on the beach in Avalon. Driving south out of Vineland we will be visiting the Army Air Museum in Millville before lunch in Fortescue and the drive east to Avalon. The Golden Inn is located right on the beach; all you need is your bathing suit and some sunscreen. The Inn provides lounges and umbrellas on the beach and also has a private pool for your use. Thursday will be a beach day, a short drive to visit the Wetlands Institute, the zoo and shopping in Stone Harbor. Thursday night we have a special clambake party planned for the tourists. Friday we head back to Vineland with a stop at the Wheaton Arts Center to watch glass blowing with a classic banquet at the hotel for all to enjoy. Departure will be Saturday morning.

This car is advertised in the latest Gazette. A great deal of work to be done, but it would be a going machine.

Some details from the seller:

Was the rear rebuilt "NO", or just powder coated? "YES"

Has any work been done on the engine? "NO"
Is that a US Buick badge on the rad?"COULD BE"
Do you know the serial? ENGINE # E 1750
How are the wheels? MORE THAN 4 WOOD HAS NO STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY
Any missing parts you are aware of? NO, BUT I'M NOT TOO FAMILIAR WITH EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS CAR
Here are some photos of the body sitting on the frame. The frame, rear end, and driveshaft have been sandblasted and powder coated black. There has been new springs made up for the suspension. The rest of the car is all in pieces and there is many extra engine parts from what I can see.

Notice the lettered pedals? Notice the door-top wood trim--I wonder if that was a carry-over from the '14's, or a customization?

Hi Ian I have a 15 Rh touring car that I purchased 55 years ago. It had many updates,The fenders ,spash shields ,were changed to the crown and the wind shield to the 24 style, top to 1 man ,B radiator covered to take hood.Some time in the 20s you could puchase the kit to modernize your car. Oh and the head lamps were changed from the forks.Most of the removed parts were kept and included.Here are the pictures.It has tires from a Canada Dept. Store,I must go to the barn to get the name,that must wait as the snow must be 3 ft. Deep. It an export #7252 under the front seat. Block#26571 and Body#26571 And a wood dash installed,and original upholstery. So what year to call it????

Here's a fascinating website that documents the history of Australia's Model T Ford body builder, who was also a Ford sales agency (among other things). I have only read the company history so far, but plan to cover the other pages shortly. I am struck by the parallels between this company and others that suffered fires in the early days of the automobile (Oldsmobile, McLaughlin, and Tudhope come to mind).

Great picture!
Maybe the car was ready for a trip to Uxbridge in April - sunny, no leaves on the trees,
spring coats on the people. Think MUD & how the rear side curtain panels might keep
some of it, thrown everywhere by the chains, out of the back seat.
They might have been heading for Scugog Island after Uxbridge. The floating bridge was
finally covered with earth & gravel by the late 1880s. The second picture is mislabelled;
it was taken about 1912.

Actually your guess was pretty good! It is George Robertson driving a Locomobile. However, the race is at the Fairmount Park Race in October of 1908. Below is a photograph of George Robertson receiving the first place trophy. The Fairmount Park race was only open to stock American cars in 1908 and was one of the major races of the period.

I think I may have figured this out--we'll need Michael to verify. I believe this is a Locomobile. I'm not sure of the race, but a #10 Loco was driven by George Robertson and finished second at the 1909 Indiana Trophy Race, after a 9th position start. Harry Stutz in a Marion, and Louis Chevrolet in a Buick also drove (less successfully) in this race.
Do I pass?

Steve May sent in the following update on his '15 Studebaker--he's making great progress! I'll use the Hudson photos in a subsequent post. And to answer your question--YES! We're very interested in seeing these progress reports--keep them coming!
That goes for anyone else with a winter project, whether maintenance, touch-up, or full restoration.

I've attached pics of my 15 Studebaker "work in progress". Not sure if anyone is interested in random shots as the car progresses?? (maybe I should start a website like John Daly and his EMF!!).

One item to note when installing side curtain fasteners on the exterior of your car. Make sure your door straps are the correct length. When my door was open, the distance from the door to the fastener was a little too close for my comfort level (less than 1/4 inch). I shortened the straps slightly.

Sad News from New Jersey

I am saddened to report that Joe Hein has passed away. While I did not know Joe well, I can say that it was always a pleasure to see him--a truly genuine nice guy. I remember him arriving at the Kingston tour, and I was helping to park people. He was just so happy to be there, and glad to see so many friends. In subsequent years at Hershey, it was a pleasure to have him stop and sit for a chat.
So many others can probably honour Joe much better than this--I'll just say that when we talk of our "New Jersey Friends", we mean people like Joe.

New Project--Model T Serial #'s

I've been thinking for a while that it would be interesting to compile a list of Canadian Brass T serial numbers. I always like to take a look at other '15's and compare them to ours, then try to figure out when certain changes occurred.
If you would like to participate, please send me your serial number, year, body style, and any other info you like, such as current owner, origins, restorer, etc. I will plan to publish the list on this site at some point, so if you would like the name and/or address withheld, please just say so. If you know of a car, but don't want to disclose the owner or other details, I would at least appreciate knowing the number, if nothing else.
Let's use the following criteria: Canadian production, 1909-1916 inclusive, can be an original body, chassis, and/or engine.

Thought of the Day--Sanitary Undercarriages

An ad for a Model T speedster was pointed out to me this morning. One comment in the glowing description was that the car has a "very sanitary" undercarriage. It sparked a bit of discussion, with a few comments about dirty roads travelled in tours gone by. The unanimous opinion was: What fun is a sanitary undercarriage?? Odd choice of words, regardless of your opinion on maintaining a grime-free chassis.

Anyhow, I guess we need a picture. Here's a shot of Tom, Hugo, and Linda ripping up the roads of Prince Edward County. I don't know why they've been dubbed the "Fifth Town Cheese Company".

On another note, how do you like the feature on French-Front Olds in the latest Gazette? I'm struck by how many unrestored examples are out there (plus the one that's been on e-bay and hcca.org lately), and by how many show up in New Zealand--even an original photo of one. And--there are a couple of PECO cars out there. Gotta love those self-generating headlights and the high tonneau, the sweeping fenders, the unique rad design with the CDO casting.... I can hardly wait for my next ride.

Wishing Stan Uher well

I thought the club might be interested to know that Stan Uher, our club President, has undergone heart surgery last Thursday to repair a leaking Mitral valve. We are happy to advise that the surgery was a complete success and he is being moved out of I C U to-day. Stan is expected to be home the middle of this week. Regards Glenn B.
